Martha Stewart's Surprising Regret

Martha Stewart's Surprising Regret

This week's Radio Cherry Bombe is probably the best yet. It's a recording of Cherry Bombe cofounder Kerry Diamond's chat with Martha Stewart at the magazine's annual Jubilee in NYC in the which the lifestyle mogul is surprisingly candid and funny.

Martha is highly accomplished and successful in so many areas of her life (this funny Buzzfeed is a quick and hilarious tour of her resumé), so hearing her say she regretted not having more children floored me (she has one daughter) and I'm embarrassed it did.

But am I the only one, despite all the strides women have made towards equality in the 21st century, who subconsciously puts 'highfalutin career woman' and 'mother' in separate boxes? Can the two co-exist? Would Martha have had all her work successes if she'd had more children? Who knows.

And that's the point, with hindsight, she doesn't care. She's realised family comes first, otherwise who will you share your successes with?

So many of us take starting a family for granted. We think compared to - making complex career choices, financing 'that' house, deciding whether or not to buy 'that car, to take that holiday - that having kids is a no-brainer.

From what I'm learning, through family and friends, having children is the single most important thing you can decide to do in life and deciding how big you want your family to be is equally important.

What are your thoughts? How did having children change your life? Or are you still deciding how many kids you'll have, if any? Pete wants two but I'm leaning towards three. I came third in my family - the 'mistake' - so I have a soft spot for that dynamic.
