A Chat with Hugh Jackman
Watch this.
Moving stuff, right?
Aside from the interviewee being interesting because he's Hugh Jackman (!), what he says is so intriguing because Hugh clearly has a deep interest in spirituality and, from that, a keen understanding of our place in the world.
This idea stuck with me...
"At the end of a shower I always turn it on cold as a little reminder that that's not going to affect who I am. The experience of being warm and pleasurable in a hot shower it's just an idea that that's better than cold. Is it comfortable to have a really cold shower in winter? It's not comfortable but why can't God exist in that uncomfortability? Why can't you be able to find rest in that? ... Why am I wasting my life only wanting the pleasurable?"
I came across the YouTube chat while researching Transcendental Meditation (Hugh is a devotee) but the series of interviews are part of a doco named "Oh My God". I haven't seen it, so can't endorse it but do yourself a favour and play the three part chat with Hugh as you're making dinner (click here for part two and here for part three). It's a thought-provoking, mentally stimulating interview - and a refreshing way of looking at daily life.
