An Ode to Good Signage
I made an impromptu trip to Inala last week, a suburb about 25 minutes drive west of where I live. Unfortunately it's got a bad name but food lovers overlook that for its rich ethnic culinary scene. There's "little Vietnam" brimming with eateries serving steaming bowls of pho and crunchy banh mi, grocers where fresh Asian produce is piled high, plus a few interesting South Pacific Island stores (where I sourced the best coconut cream I've ever tasted).
The streets are also a gallery of retro signage (these two were my favourites), stylish but accidentally so. They reminded me of the work being done by local duo Frank and Mimi.
Anyway if you're interested in checking out the suburb this is the best and most comprehensive foodie guide I've found. The journey was a reminder that you can holiday or "escape" just by changing your scenery, even if for an hour or two.
