Gilmore Girls: My Cooking Companions

Gilmore Girls: My Cooking Companions

I'm feeling a little emotional. I finally finished the 'Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life' after painstakingly rationing it out all week (I promise, there are no spoilers in this piece).

It started last weekend, I watched the first episode with my Mum on her couch, dinner on our laps - the way it was always meant to be.

For years we'd had a standing Wednesday night date (7:30pm, I think). I'd sneak into Mum and Dad's room, lie on their bed, then Mum and I would watch this show about a mother and daughter's relationship for an hour (so meta!). But that time meant to much to me.

Anyway, after finishing that first episode together, I slowly watched the remaining three: it kept me company as I baked, whizzed and chopped, preparing recipes from my new cookbook, it relaxed me as I'd stay up late into the night sorting invoices, updating Facebook and finally was my entertainer when I was tying hundreds of whisks onto hundreds of books (a little free Christmas wrapping for Three Wise Women). This morning, in bed and exhausted from a massive week I finished the final 20 minutes. The feeling is bittersweet.

After spending this whole year slowly working through all 7 seasons, and now finishing the revival, I have realised how much I have in common with Rory. Her studiousness/ambitions beginning at school, her desire to be a journalist, then a foreign correspondent - idolising Christiane Amanpour, trying to put her career before men, having a 'quarter life crisis', then deciding to write a book. The one big difference is she didn't marry her Dean, I was lucky to find my own and marry him (he's my soul mate, my everything - my Swiss Army knife person).

But I think we all can identify (or recognise someone we know) in these strong Gilmore Girls characters, that's why the show has resonated with so widely.

So tell me, have you been swept up in the Gilmore Girls palava? And who's your favourite character?
