When Life Gives You Shit Cookies...
Bad recipes happen. Sometimes because the end result is just not what you'd expected, or the combination of flavours really aren't your thing. Whatever the reason, you know it in your gut from that first taste (or in this case, 'look') and it's deeply disappointing mostly because of the anticipation that has built as you were blending, dicing, sifting, rolling... I know the feeling too well, it just happened to me.
The recipe I took a gamble on was Ginger Nut Biscuits in New Zealand's cooking bible.
It just wasn't right because I'm used to the tooth-breaking, flat ginger nut biscuits of my childhood not the puffy cookies this recipe yielded (my Nana has told me since she has a foolproof crunchy ginger nuts recipe; so that will be tested and posted up on the blog soon!)
Ashamedly, I'd usually throw failed product away, hiding that I'd made something so shit and because, what am I going to do with a tin of cookies no one wants to eat?
But this time I did something different.
Once the biscuits were cooled I put them in the food processor and slowly ground them to a sand.
My intention is to add melted butter to it later this week and make it into a base for something much better tasting... Donna Hay's Maple and Ginger Cheesecake Tart looks intriguing, but I'll update you...
But tell me of your failures and how you've managed to turn them around, I love tales of resourcefulness (and my Granny is the queen of this!)
