Golden Rules for the Kitchen

Golden Rules for the Kitchen

I wish I'd met Mrs. Charles Roundell.

Sadly, we may never know what her actual name was. Fitting of the times (1903!) she wrote her book The Still Room under her husband's name.

I came across the fascinating tome in my 94-year-old Grandma's flat over Christmas and it amused me for hours! It features old world recipes (dinners, to desserts, to regional meals - including "Australian") but also skills ie: learning how to make brandy, something calling usquebaugh, and (above) "Golden Rules for the Kitchen".

But here's my favourite excerpt,

"There is more scope for the use of brains in housewifery than in almost any of the other careers open to women, and this possibly is why so many women are fighting shy of it."

Sassy!

Tell me what old books do you love?
